Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Quick answers to common questions about LidControl.

What is LidControl?
LidControl is a small menu bar app that watches your MacBook lid angle and can automatically run Apple Shortcuts when the lid is held in a specific angle range for a moment.
What are “Trigger Zones”?
“Current Angle” is the angle (in degrees) between your screen and keyboard. Fully closed is near 0°, and more open is higher. A trigger zone is an angle range (like 20°–40°). LidControl lets you configure two independent zones, Lower (more-closed angles) and Upper (more-open angles), so each can run a different Apple Shortcut.
What does “Fire after” do?
It’s a safety delay. The lid must stay in the zone for that many seconds before the Shortcut runs. This helps prevent accidental triggers while you’re just adjusting the screen.
How do I choose what happens when a trigger fires?
Each zone runs an Apple Shortcut on macOS by name. You can select from your Shortcuts list or type a Shortcut name manually. Any Shortcut can run, so you don’t need to create special ones.
Does it keep firing repeatedly while I hold the lid in the zone?
No. It fires once when the dwell time is met, and then it won’t fire again until you leave the zone and enter it again.
Why is the trigger not firing (or firing unexpectedly)?
Most often, the zone range or “Fire after” setting needs a tweak. If the range is too wide/narrow or the dwell time is too short/long, triggers can feel unreliable. If your lid naturally rests inside a zone, narrow the range and increase “Fire after”. Also make sure LidControl is reading a real angle (not “N/A”) and that the lid stays in-range for the full dwell time.
Will this work on every Mac?
Lid angle sensing depends on hardware support. Some Macs may not expose the sensor in a way the app can read, and in that case you’ll see “N/A”.
Does it collect or send any data?
LidControl runs locally and stores your settings on your Mac. Network access is limited to license validation and optional update checks.
Is it safe to use?
LidControl can only do what your chosen Shortcuts do. If a Shortcut is powerful (e.g., deleting files, sending messages), treat it accordingly and test carefully.
